Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS), Leibniz Institute in Forschungsverbund Berlin
Complex problems in business, science and technology can often be modelled mathematically. The models are not limited to a single application, but can often be used in many ways. Moreover, many problems can be solved more quickly and cheaply using mathematical methods than by solely conducting expensive real experiments. The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) conducts project-oriented research in applied mathematics. The problem-solving process begins with interdisciplinary modelling followed by mathematical theoretical analysis of the model. Numerical simulations subsequently lead to solutions for the real application. Research at the Institute focuses on mathematical investigations of nano- and optoelectronics, optimisation and control of technological processes, phase transitions and multifunctional materials, stochastics in science and economics, flow and transport problems in continua, and numerical methods of analysis and stochastics.
